PROJECT STATEMENT

Dutch3Design organized a contest in 2013, where the challenge was to design a lamp, which can be 3D printed by consumers themselves, at home.

The lamp must fit in almost all small 3D printers and it should have a maximum dimension of 200 x 200 x 200 mm.

ELEMENTS OF NATURE

SEARCH FOR IDENTITY

The EoN stands for Elements of Nature. The idea was to look at nature and use elements of it into the design. I used elements as wind, water, sand, dust, cold as in ice and warmth as in the sun. When water seeps in the cracks of the stone, it expands when it freezes at night. When the sun rises the water melts and penetrates deeper into the cracks. At night it freezes again and widens the cracks. When it is very dry sand and dust are blown around the edges of the stone, so they get nice and smooth.

PRINTING

For the EoN I used the maximum dimensions to get the most out of my design. To get it printed without support materials I used the maximum print angle of 35 degrees.

RESULT

The result is a 3D printed led lamp that was chosen as one of the six selected designs to compete at the Dutch Design Week 2013 in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. The jury and visitors choose three winners. My design came fourth out of six.

A company called Onderstroom Design saw my design at the Dutch Design Week 2013. They contacted me and are helping me promoting the EoN.

You can buy the EoN on www.onderstroom-design.nl
